The United States Embassy in Iraq announced Sunday that it had issued instructions to its mission on movements during the month of Muharram.
The embassy said in a statement to Ashfaq News that it had restricted its movements during a month-long celebration of the Islamic festival in Muharram, especially on the commemoration of Ashura, on Tuesday September 18 to Friday, September 21 due to the expected closure of roads and unexpected crowds.
"Some of the protests in Basra have turned violent, killing and wounding protesters and security forces," US officials in Basra generally avoid any area where demonstrations can take place, including the central business district of Basra.
