    An analytical report of the "Brookings Institution" indicated that Iraq's efforts to mediate between Saudi Arabia and Iran, restore the war-torn country, a major player in the region .
    According to the report, the Iraqi efforts could help ease tensions between the two prominent rivals in the Persian Gulf, at a time when these efforts need quiet support from the United States .
    The report pointed out that reducing sectarian tensions in the region is in the interest of the United States, especially since Iraq's assistance to a Saudi-Iranian dialogue contributes to ending the Yemen war, which President Biden promised to stop .
    King Salman and his son, Crown Prince Mohammed, are considered the most hostile Saudi leaders in the history of the Kingdom, so the dialogue now with Iran represents a big step, according to the institute.
    Commenting on the talks hosted by Iraq, an Iraqi official indicated that Al-Kazemi was "very keen" for Iraq to play the role of a "bridge" between its two hostile neighbors .
    On Wednesday, Reuters quoted "informed" sources in the Middle East, that Saudi Arabia and Iran are planning to hold more direct talks this month, without specifying a precise date .
    According to the sources, the talks will aim to ease the existing tensions between the two rival countries, which could contribute to achieving stability in the region .
    The new talks heralded a potential new dynamic in the relationship between Iran, Iraq and Saudi Arabia, the three main poles in the Persian Gulf for decades .
    According to Reuters sources, the talks began after the visit of Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi to Riyadh, led by the head of Saudi intelligence Khaled Humaidan, and the deputy secretary of the Supreme Council for National Security in Iran Saeed Irwani .
    In recent years, Iraq has aimed to pursue a foreign policy of non-alignment between Saudi Arabia and Iran. Iraqi prime ministers often schedule trips to Tehran and Riyadh together in order to show this balance . 
    And former Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said in 2017 that his country was a "victim" of regional rivalries .
    Commenting on the talks, the Iraqi official said that his country's interest is for Baghdad to play the mediating role, adding: "The more confrontation in the region, the more they play here."
    He indicated that the Saudi-Iranian detente means a quieter region and a quieter Iraq .
    According to the American Institute, the talks brokered by Iraq if they result in a ceasefire in Yemen, it would be a significant improvement in regional tensions and help mitigate the world's worst humanitarian disaster .
    In the near term, it is not at all clear whether Iraq will be able to do so, especially since it is not at all certain that Saudi Arabia and Iran do indeed have the will for reconciliation .
    Iraq is still much weaker than exercising some kind of influence over its two neighbors to help advance this reconciliation, which may change the shape of the region if it concludes with positive results, according to the Brookings report .
    Iraq was a major player in the region during the seventies and eighties alongside Iran and Saudi Arabia after Britain's exit from the region, but after the US intervention in 2003, the Gulf is often seen as a bipolar region between Shiite Iran and Sunni Saudi Arabia.
