Water storage is at its lowest level..and fears of the effects of evaporation

All regions of Iraq are awaiting a heavy rain wave during the next few days and extending for several days, according to weather maps, amid hopes that it will fill the voids in the Iraqi water storage, which has decreased significantly due to continuous use two years ago, as it currently reaches only 35% of the full storage capacity.
The Ministry of Water Resources does not provide explicit figures about the size of the current water storage, but it is satisfied with saying that it has reached critical stages and has been largely consumed.
Water expert Najm Al-Ghazi said, in an interview with Al-Mada, that "the capacity of the Iraqi dams to withstand storage is 70 billion cubic meters," but added that "this capacity is related to the conditions of maintenance of these dams and the conditions of rain and water releases coming from Turkey."
Al-Ghazi added, "The current water storage in Iraq does not exceed 25 billion cubic meters," which means that only 35% of the storage capacity is filled with water, and 65% of the dams' storage is empty.
However, Al-Ghazi explains that “even the 25 billion cubic meters that Iraq currently owns, part of it is called dead storage, meaning that it cannot be used and taken out of the dams because it is below the river’s surface level unless we use pump technologies to raise it to the rivers again.”
In addition, Al-Ghazi indicates that “the water loss that evaporates from the Iraqi dams without much benefit is also estimated at about 8 billion cubic meters annually, as it evaporates due to the high temperatures and the surface area of the dams, as well as affects the quality of the remaining water, as that which evaporates is fresh water and remains Water with high salt concentrations.
Thus, what Iraq possesses of storage if it is not filled again, 32% will lose it completely during the next year by evaporation only without benefit, in addition to consuming the rest.
With regard to the ability to absorb waves and water releases, Al-Ghazi confirms, “there is a high capacity to absorb any torrents during the coming period, as water releases are no longer as they were in the past and flood waves are excluded, and now Iraq is working to establish a new dam, which is a dam with a storage capacity of 3 billion.” Cubic meters".
He stressed that "the dams on Iranian territory used to receive water from Iranian reservoirs, and now this water is suspended, so we have dams that have gone out of service, such as the Khanaqin Dam, the Mandali Dam and some small dams."
Al-Ghazi pointed out that "the Dukan and Debrendakhan dams have high energy, and according to weather indicators, there is a nearby rain wave, and these dams will be ready to receive the excess water, and there are no fears of flooding, but the biggest fears of water scarcity before new rain waves are talked about."
