Shafaq News / Wasit Agriculture Directorate announced, on Thursday, the start of harvesting wheat and barley crops in the governorate, calling for a system of "delivered and received" in the marketing process between farmers and the federal government to avoid a recurrence of previous marketing crises.
The director of the province's agriculture, Arkan Marioush, told Shafaq News Agency, "The farmers of the province have started harvesting the wheat crop, with an amount of 660,000 dunams inside the plan, and 140,000 outside the plan, in addition to barley harvest, at an amount of 27,000 dunams."
Marioush added that "the current agricultural year witnessed great difficulty in completing the four irrigations of the wheat crop, as well as other difficulties that the farmer faced from the high prices of other agricultural materials in the local market," noting that "the expectations this year for the production of Iraq's food basket of wheat crop will exceed 700 thousand tons, and the government directed that marketing be exclusively for the stores of the Ministry of Commerce.”
And the Director of Wasit Agriculture demanded, "This year will be different from the previous marketing operations of farmers and according to the commercial principle (I give you the wheat, give me the money), so that we can overcome the wheat crop crisis in the country."
