A government advisor confirmed that the sixth round of negotiations between Saudi Arabia and Iran in Baghdad will be held at the level of the foreign ministers of the two countries, stressing that the timing will be agreed upon later in coordination with Iraq, and considered this an important development in terms of stability in the region in general.
Hussein Allawi said, "Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi made great efforts to reduce the escalation in the region, especially between Saudi Arabia and Iran, after years of escalation between the two neighboring countries."
Allawi added, "Al-Kazemi succeeded in reaching good goals, but the government does not want to announce the results until the end of these efforts." He pointed out that "the results of these efforts began to appear clearly through the participation of Iranian pilgrims in this year's Hajj season, their entry into the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, entry visas for Iranian diplomats, de-escalation in Yemen, and the renewal of the armistice." Allawi explained, "Iraq embraced the dialogues between the two countries after seeing the need for regional harmony, and that this would be reflected on stability in the region and its internal security."
He stressed, "Al-Kazemi took steps more than two years ago to build confidence between the Iranian and Saudi leadership, and Baghdad succeeded in serving as a table for dialogue between the two countries and for them to sit on five rounds that were very difficult and achieved very great goals."
He continues, "The dialogue will move from the intelligence and security dimension to the political dimension, which is a major shift in the relationship that was severed in 2016 between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Islamic Republic of Iran." Allawi said, "We have before us a success story that has been built and developed, which is what the Iraqi leadership, represented by Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi, adheres to, as well as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the supporting ministries."
And he added, "The Yemeni file is witnessing settlements between the Yemeni parties themselves, and the discourse of the Saudi and Iranian leaderships is heading towards friendliness and cohesion between the two Islamic countries, going to deeper dialogues and dismantling problems." Allawi expected, "Everyone will see during the next stage the transition in relations and the reflection of those relations on Iraq." He stated, "Al-Kazemi seeks to invest this climate to support the stable situation in Iraq and to promote it economically, investment and developmentally." And Allawi said, "Both Saudi Arabia and Iran look at Iraq through its official representation, which is the government, and they do not care about what comes from some parties in an attempt to weaken diplomatic relations." And he finds, "The invitation of Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz of Iraq to participate in the international conference that will be held in Riyadh next month, with the participation of US President Joe Biden, is an important signal that reflects the role and stability of the Iraqi government and the strengthening of relations with Iraqi society."
The government advisor stated, "Everyone is looking at the importance of Iraq's role and its return at the regional level, and how it played an important role in bringing the views of two important countries in the region closer, and the results that emerged from the dialogues." Allawi stressed, "The most prominent result of those dialogues is that the next round will be between the foreign ministers of Iran and Saudi Arabia, and there were previous understandings between all parties that bless Iraq's mission in sponsoring the next round of dialogues."
He cautioned, "The timing of the next round will be determined by the two negotiating countries in coordination and consultation with the Iraqi government, and this path means that we have reached the direct meeting and a long-term calm process between the two countries, as they seek to restore normal relations."
Allawi added, "The restoration of relations means the return of ambassadors between Saudi Arabia and Iran, and this is the point of initiating the resumption of relations, and in the end, this is a great success for the Iraqi government, which dealt with the file calmly and rationally."
Earlier, Baghdad hosted five rounds of dialogue between Saudi Arabia and Iran, attended by security representatives from the two countries, in which various security and intelligence fields were discussed.
