    Economy News - Baghdad
On Tuesday, the Ministry of Planning spoke about the challenges that prevent reducing poverty rates in the country to 15% as part of the poverty alleviation strategy.
The official spokesman for the ministry, Abdul-Zahra al-Hindawi, said in a statement followed by "Al-Eqtisad News", that "among the ministry's strategic plan (2018-2022) is to reduce the poverty rate to 15%, after it was 22.5% at the end of 2019."
He added, "The repeated challenges that Iraq faces prevented it from reaching the ministry's goals in this aspect, as the first strategy that was launched was in 2010, and the poverty rate had reached 23%, and at the end of 2013 it decreased to 15%, but Iraq entered a tunnel." A double crisis represented in the war with the terrorist ISIS and the large waves of displacement that exceeded five million displaced people, the vast majority of whom have become poor, in addition to the cessation of projects, all of which led to a rise in the percentage, perhaps to more than it was in the past.
Al-Hindawi continued, "The second strategy, which was launched in 2018 and for a period of four years, prevented the achievement of its objectives due to the Corona pandemic crisis and the economic crisis as a result of the drop in oil prices and the confusion of the economy, as a result of which the poverty rate rose to 25 percent."
A spokesman for the Ministry of Planning expressed his hope to "achieve the desired goals during the implementation of the ministry's new strategy, which will be launched in 2024," noting that "the challenges that Iraq faced in particular, whether they were health, security, social or economic, are outside the scope of the planner's thinking." He pointed out that "the possibilities that Iraq is going through are not expected."
