After 18 years of hiatus, the Ministry of Industry revealed that the iron and steel plant in Basra has been restored to life again, at a time when it is seeking to find a legal settlement with the Italian side regarding the contracts for the establishment of the Ishtar complex for the manufacture of cars, machines, and production and heavy equipment that were confiscated during the international blockade on Iraq in 1990.
The project to rehabilitate the iron and steel plant in Basra is divided into two parts, the first includes a contract for rehabilitating the rolling mill and the other a contract for rehabilitating the steel factory, as their work is proceeding at an escalating pace for production lines and installation of equipment in cooperation with Turkish supervisors and experts.
The iron and steel factory in Basra Governorate affiliated to the Ministry of Industry and Minerals is one of the most important factories and factories in Iraq and the Middle East because of its great economic return. Before the weak souls.
The Director General of the General Company for Iron and Steel affiliated to the Ministry, Abbas Hayal, told Al-Sabah that the end of March will witness the opening of the rolling mill after its rehabilitation.
He added that the Turkish company in charge of the rehabilitation process will also start installing equipment for the (steel and engineering services) plant for the production of iron billet, with a combined total production capacity of the two plants amounting to 500,000 tons annually of spooled reinforcing steel (10 mm to 32 mm). He explained that the completion of the final rehabilitation work for the iron and steel plant will be completed according to the timings set by the end of this year, which is the date for the trial operation of the company’s factories, which have been suspended for more than 18 years, to contribute to providing 30 percent of the local market’s needs for reinforcing steel.
He indicated that there is a continuous follow-up by the Prime Minister, Muhammad Shayaa Al-Sudani, and the Minister of Industry, Khaled Battal, to the ongoing preparations for the opening of the factory through the provision of financial allocations. Founded in 1972 in Iraq, specialized in the production of reinforcing steel, sections and steel pipes.
In a related context, he stressed the existence of efforts to conduct negotiations with Italian companies and other countries to retrieve the equipment of the Ishtar factories for the manufacture of steel cars, equipment and industrial machines that were confiscated during the international embargo on Iraq by Resolution 661 in 1990.
He stated that the confiscation of this huge industrial equipment took place while it was on its way to Iraq in the ports of Arab and European countries after the United Nations imposed the blockade.
He pointed out that the former regime had previously concluded contracts at a cost of nearly $3 billion in the 1980s with Italian companies to construct the Ishtar Factories complex for the production of steel billets for cars, machinery and industrial equipment on a land adjacent to the iron and steel plant in Khor al-Zubayr in Basra.
He added that despite the disappearance of the foundations and earthworks for the giant Ishtar Factories complex, it is possible to use the engineering and technical plans developed by international companies to revive the project, which is a gateway to the manufacture of a full-fledged car in the country, as well as the manufacture of various equipment and machinery to establish an infrastructure for heavy and light industries. and electronic equipment.
