The Iraqi government has opened an investigation related to the kidnapping of an Israeli-Russian researcher in Baghdad, according to government spokesman Basem Al-Awadi, after Israel accused an armed Iraqi faction of being responsible for her disappearance.
Al-Awadi said in a televised interview, in response to a question about the disappearance of researcher Elizabeth Tsurkov, last March, that "the Iraqi government is actually conducting an official investigation."
He added, "Since this issue is at this level...and overlapping, therefore, there is no official statement in this regard until the Iraqi government completes its official investigations and reaches results."
"After that, there will be statements or official positions by the Iraqi government," he added.
This comes as the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement, on Wednesday, that Tsurkov went missing after she went to Iraq for research purposes, on behalf of Princeton University.
The office said it was being held in Iraq by the Iran-backed Shiite militia Kataib Hezbollah.
The statement added, "Elizabeth Tsurkov is still alive, and we consider Iraq responsible for her fate and safety," noting that the relevant agencies in Israel are dealing with the situation.
