Iraq's largest oil refinery is racing against time to restart it, and an official sets the date

The “Oil & Gas” website, which specializes in energy news, stated that Iraq is moving quickly in order to complete work on a project to repair the Baiji oil refinery, the largest refinery in Iraq, which was severely damaged during the war with ISIS 7 years ago.
The report quoted an official in the Iraqi Ministry of Oil, Hamid Yunus, as saying, “The Baiji refinery suffered damages that exceeded 90% during the conflict, and we are racing against time to finish the rehabilitation work, and we expect it to be completed before the end of next year.”
The report indicated that "the Baiji refinery, located in Salah al-Din Governorate, was producing about a third of Iraq's refining capacity before it was severely damaged during the war with ISIS in 2014."
The report quoted Yunus as saying, "The project was launched in May, and it is expected to be completed at the end of the year 2024, and for the refinery to return to its pre-war production level of 120,000 barrels per day."
According to the director of the refinery, Adnan Hammoud, the first phase of the rehabilitation project includes the removal of rubble, while the second phase will start this year and includes maintenance, construction and operation.
And the day before yesterday, Wednesday, the Prime Minister, Muhammad Shia Al-Sudani, confirmed what I reported regarding the recovery of stolen equipment and devices from the Baiji refinery in Salah Al-Din Governorate.
Al-Sudani said, "sincere efforts helped the government recover stolen materials and equipment from the Baiji refinery that caused its disruption, and they are materials, equipment, and articulated devices that can cost us millions of dollars, and if we ask for them, it will take years to manufacture them."
Al-Sudani's statement came after an informed government source said, on Wednesday morning, that Prime Minister Muhammad Shia'a Al-Sudani will announce during his current visit to Baiji district that the materials stolen from its oil refineries will be returned.
The director of the Baiji refinery, northwest of Salah al-Din, told Adnan Muhammad Hammoud that al-Sudani returned the stolen equipment during the war with ISIS, and inspected several pioneering projects to restore the refinery to regional prominence.
The Baiji refinery is the largest oil refinery and processing complex in Iraq. It was established in July 1978, and it produces a third of the Iraqi refineries' production.
The refinery is located in Salah al-Din Governorate, about 130 kilometers north of Baghdad, in the middle of the road leading from Baghdad to Mosul.
Its annual production capacity is 15 million tons of oil derivatives, and its refining capacity is 310,000 barrels per day (49,000 m3/d).
ISIS took control of the Baiji refinery on June 24, 2014, but the Iraqi armed forces managed to recover the refinery from the organization's grip on October 16, 2015.
