    Baghdad today - Baghdad
Saudi Arabia intends to establish the “Green Corridors” project in cooperation with India and the United States, in a project that will be a new “development road” that may abort the Iraqi development road early, which was an idea dating back to the 1920s, but many obstacles, whether internal, regional or international, prevented its completion. As observers say.
On May 28, Iraq launched the Development Road Project, or what was known as the Dry Canal, which is a network of railway lines and highways linking the large port of Al-Faw in the Basra Governorate in southern Iraq to the Turkish border in the north, thus forming a link between the trade of the East and the West, that is, from Asia to Europe.
Today, Saturday (September 9, 2023), it was announced that Saudi Arabia and the United States had signed a memorandum of understanding to establish a protocol that would contribute to establishing transcontinental green corridors, according to what was reported by the Saudi Press Agency. The project aims to enhance energy security and clean energy development efforts, facilitate the transfer of renewable electricity and clean hydrogen via cables and pipelines, as well as establish railway lines, enhance trade exchange, and increase the passage of goods by linking railways and ports.
The Saudi Crown Prince added in his speech during the G20 summit in India that the project “achieves the common interests of our countries by enhancing economic interconnection, which reflects positively on our partners in other countries and the global economy in general.”
He added that the project will contribute to "developing and rehabilitating the infrastructure that includes railways, connecting ports, increasing the passage of goods and services, enhancing trade exchange between the countries concerned, and extending pipelines to export and import electricity and hydrogen to enhance the security of global energy supplies, in addition to data transmission cables through... Highly efficient cross-border network.
Bloggers on social media criticized the Iraqi governments' diplomacy and policies that led to the delay of this vital project, which is supposed to revitalize Iraq economically away from oil imports, which constitute 98% of the Iraqi economy.
Ziad Al-Hashimi confirmed that these new developments in the region are not in the interest of Iraqi transportation projects.

As researcher Yacoub Al-Khader asks: We do not know whether the Prime Minister’s Advisor for Transport Affairs or those in charge of the Development Road Project, the Director General of the Iraqi Railway Company and the Director General of the General Company for Iraqi Ports have heard about this project, and if they have heard, what advice did they provide to the government about it? How to deal with this important development.

As for Nabil Jabbar Al-Tamimi, he said: The deal was concluded apart from the Iraqi development road project. Iraq must invest more and quickly to make the project a success, and draw and stabilize its water borders.

Reports indicate that the United States has sought in recent years to confront the “Belt and Road Initiative” launched by President Xi Jinping, which has funded infrastructure projects worth hundreds of billions of dollars in emerging markets. China has also strengthened its relations with the Middle East, which helped achieve a détente between Saudi Arabia and Iran earlier this year.
Lebanese researcher Charbel Barakat explained that the railway project that the United States, Saudi Arabia, India and the Emirates intend to sign during the G20 summit to link India to Europe may negatively affect the Silk Road (the Belt and Road project) that China is building, as well as the development road project that Iraq recently announced. Release it.
