    Baghdad today - follow-up
Today, Saturday (September 23, 2023), the Ministry of Environment announced the implementation of an international cooperation program in coordination with the European Union in the field of building national capabilities to manage radioactive waste, stressing its endeavor to properly manage the file, while an environmental researcher describes the radioactive waste file in Iraq as “neglected.”
The Ministry has previously warned of the great dangers caused by radioactive waste in the country, which is not dealt with and destroyed in healthy ways, stressing the necessity of developing treatments for the file and not continuing to neglect it.
According to the Director of the Ministry’s Radiation Protection Center, Sabah Al-Husseini, “The Ministry began the program with the European Union,” by launching a program that includes holding training courses on the general foundations and concepts for licensing all stages of radioactive waste disposal, in addition to introducing trainees to the general structure of international guides and standards issued by Interna- _ _ _ _ _ _ For radioactive waste disposal facilities.
He added, "The center conducts an evaluation of all radiological and nuclear sites and radiation sources, to determine the degree of their compliance with regulatory requirements or not, in order to take technical and supervisory measures to avoid exposure to these contaminated materials if necessary," noting that "the center works within the national program to remove Radioactive contamination throughout the country, which aims to complete the implementation of decontamination activities in Nineveh, Salah al-Din, and Dhi Qar governorates, as well as Anbar.”
Environmental researcher, Ali Al-Zaidi, stressed “the necessity of international cooperation and coordination to manage radioactive waste, as dealing with it in the country is not correct,” indicating that “the program that the ministry is talking about needs practical application to manage this waste through incinerators and sanitary landfills that must be created.” According to sound standards.”
He considered that "the file of radioactive waste is neglected in Iraq, and it caused environmental and health pollution during previous governments, and the current government must establish scientific steps to manage this waste and get rid of its serious damage," calling for "the importance of cooperation with foreign companies specialized in radioactive waste management."
There are no declared rates of pollution in Iraq, but previous statements by the Ministry of Environment and specialists confirm that the issue is considered one of the difficult files, as there are many pollutants inside and outside cities, resulting from multiple causes, including previous wars and their waste, and the presence of factories inside cities, in addition to medical waste. And others.
