Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council of Iran, Ali Akbar Ahmadian, stressed during his meeting with his Iraqi counterpart, Qassem Al-Araji, on Sunday, the necessity of implementing the security agreement with Iraq accurately and completely, considering this to ensure the establishment of security on the borders between the two countries.
According to Iranian media, the Iranian official discussed in this meeting, which was held in Tehran and is considered the second of its kind, “issues of common interest and how to implement the security agreement between Iran and Iraq.”
Ahmadian referred to “the security agreement between Iran and Iraq concluded last year,” considering it “a reasonable and appropriate road map to neutralize the elements that disturb the security of the two countries and the region,” stressing the necessity of “implementing this agreement accurately and completely.”
When he received the Iraqi delegation, he touched on “the agreements concluded between Tehran and Baghdad in various fields, including economic ones,” stressing the need for “both sides to benefit from the many capabilities and make joint efforts to revitalize cooperation between the two parties.”
As for Al-Araji, he stressed “the Iraqi security apparatus’ determination to implement the agreement,” explaining that “Iraqi officials are seizing all opportunities to enhance and strengthen relations with Iran.”
Earlier yesterday, the National Security Advisor, Qassem Al-Araji, went to the Iranian capital, Tehran. Heading a security delegation.
According to a statement by Al-Araji’s media office, he headed to Tehran at the head of a security delegation, to complete the implementation of the security agreement between Iraq and Iran.
During the past few weeks, the Iraqi federal forces took control of about 12 border points between Iraq and Iran, after removing Iranian opposition members from the border, according to the Deputy Commander of Joint Operations, Lieutenant General Qais al-Muhammadawi.
He added to the official agency, “A higher committee formed headed by Al-Araji, and specialized officers from the Ministries of Defense, Interior, Chancellery, and security services, has been working for nearly a year to establish a mechanism for agreement with the Islamic Republic of Iran regarding border control by our federal units, specifically the border units,” pointing out that “there is An agreement to remove the Iranian-Kurdish opposition present on the border.
He explained, “This mechanism has begun to work, and during the past two weeks there have been more than 10 to 12 points captured by the border units, and Iranian Kurdish opposition members have been removed from the border towards the center according to specific locations.”
He pointed out that “the Iraqi constitution is clear and we will never allow Iraq to be a launching pad for aggression against neighboring countries, whether Iran, Turkey or other countries. At the same time, there is confirmation from the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, and the Constitution and what dictates our mission and function, that Iraq’s sovereignty, respect for it, and respect for customs are important.” Very much,” expressing his hope that “this work will continue in accordance with agreements and diplomatic and security activity on the borders, whether with Iran or Turkey, for the purpose of mutual respect and preservation of sovereignty.”
He also stated that “the issue of the violation, whether by Iran, Turkey, or any other country, of Iraq’s sovereignty is unacceptable, and this is a fixed vision, whether at the parliamentary, governmental, national, or security leadership levels. Therefore, we hope that the border sectors will continue to hold these points, and the agreement will go in the direction of finalizing all its details.” And tightening up the loose ends.”
