    At the beginning of next November, the Ministry of Health will begin work on the health insurance project in Baghdad as a first stage, while the procedures for contracting with service providers and electronic linking between the project institutions have been completed.
    The official spokesman for the Health Insurance Authority in the Ministry, Dr. Ihab Abdel Karim Khalaf, said in an interview with Al-Sabah, followed by Al-Iqtisad News, that health insurance is included among the priorities of the government’s ministerial curriculum, because it contributes to enhancing comprehensive health coverage and improving the quality of medical services provided to patients. Reducing financial burdens and social inequality, as well as contributing to strengthening the economy.
    He explained that the guarantee project was launched at the beginning of this year, and it was decided to begin trial operation as a first phase on the first of next November of this year over a period of six months.
    Khalaf stated that most countries in the world take many years to start implementing it in order to follow it up and address some of the weaknesses during its implementation, and our ambition is to reach the largest segment of society and facilitate the provision of services in the private and public sectors.
    He added that the relevant categories have been fully registered, while the percentage of the categories of retirees and voluntary autism patients has reached more than 70 percent, and the numbers of retirees include 30,000, and 20,000 autistic patients, and it is hoped that their numbers will increase when the service is provided, in addition to completing the numbers of other categories by a percentage. 100 percent, which is targeting 100,000 people covered by the social welfare network, and 150,000 employees and their families, noting that health insurance targets 300,000 citizens as a first stage in Baghdad Governorate.
    Khalaf continued that the project will include all governorates in gradual and partial stages, as we hope to increase the number of target groups to one million guaranteed as a second stage.
    He confirmed that the Authority has completed contracts with a network of health service providers for those insured with high quality, and that the infrastructure of the Insurance Authority has been completed by 90 percent, amounting to 21 health institutions, which are government hospitals, private wings of private hospitals, private consulting clinics in government hospitals, private clinics, laboratories and pharmacies that contribute By providing foreign and local medicines, with the aim of encouraging the policy of localization of medicines, which encourages the investment aspect in the health sector, and the private sector’s competition in partnership with the government sector, in addition to finalizing contracts with electronic link companies and printing electronic cards that the citizen carries to show them when he visits service providers.
