Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said today (Sunday) that “the road to the San Francisco summit will not be smooth,” referring to an expected meeting between President Xi Jinping and his American counterpart Joe Biden, according to what was reported by the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Wang met with Biden and his senior aides in Washington in recent days, and agreed to work together to organize a meeting between the Chinese and American presidents on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit.
Diplomatic movements between the two sides have increased in recent months, most of which came at the request of the United States, with the aim of salvaging relations that deteriorated rapidly early in the year, after the United States shot down a spy balloon said to have been launched by China.
The ministry said that Wang's statements came after his meeting with American strategic officials in Washington, according to Reuters news agency.
Wang said that China and the United States need to "return to Bali," referring to the most recent meeting between Biden and Xi on the sidelines of the G20 summit on the Indonesian island held last November, during which they discussed the situation in Taiwan and the rivalry and talks between them.
He added that the two sides sent positive signals regarding achieving stability and improving relations, noting that it is useful and necessary to maintain dialogue even with various differences, contradictions, and issues to be resolved.
