Despite the calm situation in Baghdad and the provinces compared to previous years, and despite the development witnessed by the political and social process in Iraq at the present time, female candidates for the provincial council elections expected next December indicated that several challenges continue to stand in the way of their rise in the sea of politics, including political violence. Which is practiced by extremist and extremist parties, in addition to difficulties related to social traditions. The candidate, Dr. Nour Al-Hasnawi, said in an interview with “Al-Sabah”: “Political violence and threats to female candidates are among the most prominent challenges,” and indicated that “despite the relative safety that Baghdad is experiencing today compared to the years of conflict, women candidates are still... They are exposed to threats and violence from extremist and extremist groups that refuse to represent women in the political scene.” She added, "There are also other factors that hinder women's participation in political life in Baghdad, such as cultural and social bias. There are still traditional beliefs and perceptions that restrict women's role in society and limit the possibility of their effective participation in political work," and stressed, "Women candidates need to confront... These obstacles and work to change the culture and enhance awareness of the importance of women’s participation in political decision-making.”
She added, "However, we must note that there is progress gradually occurring in this field. Baghdad has witnessed an increase in the number of women holding important political positions, including ministers, representatives, and advisors to the government, and this gradual transformation reflects the trend towards enhancing women's participation." in political life and enabling them to contribute to decision-making,” calling on all concerned parties to “work together to promote women’s rights, empower them, and encourage them to participate effectively politically in Baghdad and throughout the country.”
For her part, candidate Fatima Al-Hassani indicated, in an interview with Al-Sabah, that “the challenges faced by female candidates for membership in the provincial councils are no different from male candidates, as both are in the midst of electoral competition, with a difference and the ability to deliver their program to the Iraqi voter, who has become very aware of all the details of the process.” Electoral experience through going through many electoral experiences in previous years. She added, “Here comes the extent of the candidate’s sincerity in how they market themselves through promises or through the services or needs that can be provided to the voter,” and explained that “the voter here, first and foremost, is the one who has the decisive say, which will be clear and evident on election day.” And who will have his vote after all these performances in the race to present the best, and who will have the best luck in gaining people’s trust?”
In turn, candidate Maysaa Mahdi Al-Eidan said, in an interview with “Al-Sabah,” that “women’s participation in political life is evident in its importance in supporting the role of women and integrating them into the development process, in addition to improving the political and social level to assume the tasks of defending political issues facing society, such as poverty and unemployment.” ".
She noted that “the presence of women in decision-making centers would achieve the principle of equal opportunities and justice politically, socially and economically and eliminate the stereotypical image of women and stereotyped roles. Women’s participation in parliamentary representation and parties increases their responsibility towards societal and women’s issues, which increases their affiliation and contribution to Improving the country's productivity. Al-Eidan stressed that “the issue of empowering women in the political field and supporting their serious participation in political life is a controversial issue, as it has not been sufficiently presented on the agenda of political parties and governmental institutions in all parts of the world, as a result of the prevailing social reality in some societies, and highlights the features of women’s political participation.” As a national demand, given that it represents half of society, its political participation is considered one of the most prominent manifestations of democracy and the achievement of justice, which was previously agreed upon by many of the agreements and treaties that followed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.”
