Baghdad/Al-Masala Al-Hadath: The poor class in Iraq suffers from difficulty obtaining suitable housing. Real estate prices in Iraq are very high, and the poor cannot afford them. There is also a shortage of social housing for the poor.
Therefore, allocating government housing units to the poor is a fair and necessary requirement, as these housing units will help the poor obtain a suitable home and improve their living conditions.
Iraqi employee Ahmed Al-Khafaji, 45 years old, says: “I live in a rented house, and I pay a monthly rent of 500,000 Iraqi dinars (about 300 US dollars). This amount is a huge burden on my income, leaving me with nothing to support my family. I call on the government to allocate the housing units it builds to the poor, so that we can have a suitable home for ourselves.”
Umm Muhammad, 30 years old, a mother of four children, says: “I am a widow, and my husband was martyred in the war against ISIS. I live with my children in a small house that cannot accommodate us. “I am having difficulty providing food, clothing, and basic needs for my children, and I call on the government to help me obtain a housing unit, so that I can raise my children in a suitable environment.”
Ali Al-Sultani, 25 years old, unemployed, says: “I have been unemployed for years, and I cannot support myself. “I live with my parents in a small house that cannot accommodate us, and I call on the government to help me obtain a housing unit, so that I can get married and start a family.”
There are many European countries that have a successful experience in providing cheap social housing. These countries have laws and regulations that regulate the process of providing social housing and help the poor obtain housing units at reasonable prices.
Therefore, Iraq can benefit from the experience of European countries in providing cheap social housing, as this will help solve the housing problem for the poor in Iraq and improve their living conditions.
As the Iraqi government began building housing projects, it became necessary to allocate them to the poor and low-income people, and this requires enacting laws and regulations that regulate the process of providing social housing, and make it easier for the poor to obtain housing units at reasonable prices.
Hind Al-Bannai wrote to Al-Masala that Prime Minister Muhammad Al-Sudani opened a private residential project, the price of a unit exceeding 300 thousand dollars.
She continued: “There seems to be confusion and ambiguity in understanding support (the private sector) or promoting investment!” Assuming the intentions are correct, it is not one of his duties, nor is it correct, for him to open projects to which the government, its companies, or its investment funds do not contribute, because this action contradicts the principles of competitiveness and equality, as he must open all private sector projects, small and large.
