After the Kurdish delegation visited the capital, Baghdad, member of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, Wafa Muhammad Karim, revealed to “Baghdad Today” the contents of the agreement between the federal government and the Kurdistan Regional Government.
Karim said today, Thursday (November 30, 2023), that “the Kurdish government delegation that visited the capital, Baghdad, last Monday, asked Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa al-Sudani to do two things.”
Two Kurdish requests
He added, "The first request is to implement the budget agreement and send the region's full share of the budget. The other request is to send the amount of 3 salaries remaining for the current year, which are the salaries of October, November, and December."
Karim pointed out, “The Sudanese agreed to send 700 billion dinars for each of the remaining three months of the current year, on the condition that the Council of Ministers votes on this proposal, and at most this issue will be presented to the Council in its next session next week.”
The region’s salary crisis...what are the solutions?
On Tuesday (November 28, 2023), Kurdistan Democratic Party member Saleh Omar confirmed that full compliance with the financial budget law by the Iraqi government ends the crisis in the salaries of employees in the region.
Omar said in an interview with “Baghdad Today” that “the commitment of federal government officials to the financial budget law ends the salary crisis, and it is not possible to continue with this monthly suffering due to the delay in sending financial sums.”
He added, "The region fully committed to the budget law and implemented all the instructions and conditions requested by Baghdad, but the latter disavowed its commitment to the law, and they are the ones bearing the salary crisis."
Government delegation
On Monday (November 27, 2023), a delegation from the Kurdistan region headed to the capital, Baghdad, to discuss oil, salaries, and budget files.
The "Baghdad Today" correspondent said, "A delegation from the Kurdistan region, headed by Awat Janab, Minister of Finance, Chief of the Cabinet Office, Omid Sabah, Cabinet Secretary Amanj Rahim, Head of the Coordination and Follow-up Office, Abdul Hakim Khosrow, and Cabinet Advisor Khaled Hadi, headed this morning to the capital, Baghdad."
He added, "The delegation is scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani, to discuss the salaries of Kurdistan Region employees, amending the budget law and the process of oil exports in the Kurdistan Region."
The Kurdistan region is witnessing a wave of public anger, due to the salary crisis, which resulted in demonstrations in Sulaymaniyah and many cities in the region that lasted for months to demand rights and be linked directly to the center.
