International efforts to help Iraq confront water scarcity

The Ministry of Agriculture and the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) organized a symposium on how to manage and deal with water in light of the scarcity crisis that Iraq is suffering from. The conference discussed how to use modern methods in agriculture, the most prominent of which is the formation of water user associations with the adoption of a laser leveling machine and fertilizing seeds. .
The symposium, which was held at the University of Baghdad and attended by Al-Sabah, presented a model of modern methods in agriculture, as well as presenting proposals to increase the cultivated area and reduce water losses through the use of laser technology in the agricultural process and enhance agricultural production, to contribute to increasing yields.
JICA experts, Dr. Akihiro Fukuda and Dr. Asumu Yasuno, lectured at the symposium, during which they discussed the mechanism of action of the systems that demonstrated their efficiency not long ago and which work is still ongoing to date, with the aim of addressing water scarcity as a result of the negative effects of climate change, with the participation of An elite group of professors and graduate students at the College of Agriculture, University of Baghdad.
The symposium, which witnessed extensive discussions about the project by the attendees, focused on setting a specific goal to grant water user associations large areas of land in order to reach one hundred percent during the year 2035 in improving production yields, while ensuring that all support is provided to improve surface irrigation. The experts touched on the positive impact of the Water Users Associations Project during the month of August of this year, while the technical support project schedules and the most important model sites in some districts and districts in the Iraqi governorates were presented, and the Japanese loan project amounting to approximately $140 million was highlighted to support important agricultural projects in Iraq, as these projects included the reclamation of large lands, as well as the rehabilitation of sub-projects and the support of sub-water user associations, which experts considered the backbone for the success of this experiment, which was used with great success in Japan hundreds of years ago.
The symposium highlighted a productivity comparison of the wheat crop under 50 percent of the water condition, as this comparison was based on the application of water user associations with the use of a laser leveling machine and light-seeded fertilized seeds, as these factors are among the most important measures in food security.
The participants concluded by providing some recommendations regarding food security, which included calculating the area covered by associations and policies aimed at increasing areas in the near future, in addition to emphasizing the expansion of the cultivated area, forming and activating associations in the correct manner, and working to review their policies from time to time, as well as Support them technically and financially, as they are participatory associations and rely on collecting donations from contributing members.
It is noteworthy that the official spokesman for the government, Bassem Al-Awadi, confirmed to “Al-Sabah” earlier, that “Iraq is working hard to expand irrigation technologies that regulate the use of water within agricultural fields and address water scarcity in the country, which enables the expansion of the agricultural area in All governorates as a result of the lack of water revenues from downstream countries.
Al-Awadi continued that the country needs to reach the production of irrigation systems to 1,500 systems, at a time when the local manufacturing capabilities do not exceed 150 systems, pointing out that expanding the production of these technologies is extremely important, which raises the production of agricultural yields and brings them to large levels that cover the need. The country is one of the strategic crops, pointing out that water scarcity can be turned into an opportunity for success by expanding the use of advanced technologies that regulate the use of water and give the plant the amount of water it needs, away from all forms of water waste.
