On Wednesday, the Kurdistan Region Council of Ministers discussed ways to advance the electrical sector and find alternative sources, and presented a number of proposals to improve the reality of national electricity and prevent any general outage.
This came during its regular weekly meeting chaired by Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, in the presence of Deputy Speaker Qubad Talabani.
The first paragraph of the agenda, according to a statement, included discussion of the tragic fire accident that broke out in a building within the Soran Autonomous Administration on the 8th of this month, which claimed the lives of 14 people and injured a number of others, where the emergency measures taken by the concerned authorities and the investigations were discussed. relating to the circumstances of the accident.
The Prime Minister, on behalf of the Council, expressed his sincere condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims, wishing the injured a speedy recovery. The Council of Ministers also directed government institutions to follow up on safety measures in public and private places, in implementation of the previous decision of the Council of Ministers regarding safety measures in those places.
In the second paragraph of the agenda, the Council of Ministers unanimously approved the recommendations and solutions presented by the Deputy Prime Minister in the previous session, regarding the increasing cases of violence against women. Then, the Minister of Electricity, Kamal Muhammad, presented a report on the electricity situation in the Kurdistan Region, highlighting the challenges facing the electricity system in the region, specifically the problem of the general outage that the network was exposed to on the 30th of last month, and the Minister provided an overview of the efforts and projects that the Ministry is working on. To enhance electricity production and return processing hours to normal, in addition to discussing the prepayment and pricing project.
The Minister of Electricity indicated in the report that the Kurdistan Region currently produces 3,473 megawatts of electricity, confirming the return of the national system to normal after the general fire problem. He explained that the electricity generation units provide citizens with energy from the national system for between 8 and 10 hours.
The Minister noted the continuous efforts and projects undertaken by the Ministry to increase electricity production, through the use of combined cycle units in generating stations. He also indicated that the cause of the general outage was merely a technical problem, as happens in many countries of the world, and denied incorrect rumors claiming that The Kurdistan Region sells nationally produced electricity to other regions in Iraq. He also explained that the electricity production in the region will be distributed fairly to all regions of the Kurdistan Region.
The paragraph also included presenting a number of proposals and requests to improve the reality of national electricity, prevent any general outages, and reduce the rate of waste of produced electricity, as the Council of Ministers assigned the Ministry of Finance and Economy and the concerned authorities to take the necessary measures to meet the needs and allocate the necessary budget. It also directed the Ministry of Electricity to continue its efforts and projects to solve the problems. Without placing financial burdens on citizens, he also stressed the need to strengthen the ministry’s efforts to find alternative sources of electricity, relying on clean sources, especially solar energy.
Regarding the prepayment system project for electricity fees, the Ministry confirmed that the project does not affect any governorate, district, or region in Kurdistan, stressing that it will work to distribute energy in all regions fairly, and explained that the project is a means of paying electricity fees without affecting energy distribution. .
The Council of Ministers reiterated the necessity of not placing financial burdens on citizens with the prepayment project, and that its goal should be to collect revenues in a modern way, to repurpose them in projects to strengthen the national electric energy sector and public services, and rationalize the consumption of produced electricity, which contributes to increasing processing hours.
He also called on citizens to cooperate with the government by rationalizing electricity consumption and paying its fees on a regular and continuous basis, so that the government can cover the largest part of the costs of electricity production and better sustain it for citizens.
After that, the Minister of Finance and Economy, Awat Sheikh Janab, reviewed the results of his visit with the Minister of Interior, Reber Ahmed, to Baghdad, which focused on strengthening cooperation between the federal government and the regional government regarding border crossings and customs, taking into account constitutional powers, and promoting the diversification of sources of income in Iraq and the region in order to increase revenues. The public and its spending on public service projects.
At the conclusion of its meeting, the Council of Ministers decided that Monday, 12/18/2023, will be an official holiday in all governorates and independent administrations in the Kurdistan Region, on the occasion of holding the irregular governorate council elections in a region in Iraq.
