In light of the current events, regional developments, and the continuation of the Israeli aggression against the Gaza Strip, which led to the targeting of ships crossing through the Red Sea, and an increase in insurance fees by amounts that may reach 40%.
With the slowdown in traffic in the main shipping channels and the increase in insurance costs, conditions appear to be favorable for Iraq if its geographical location and ports are optimally exploited.
In this regard, a member of the Parliamentary Transport Committee, Zuhair Al-Fatlawi, stressed that “Iraq must exploit this tense situation to its advantage because of its distinguished location and its connection between the East and the West.”
He pointed out in a press interview seen by Taqaddam that “Iraq is currently considered one of the easiest and safest transportation routes, which makes it a preferred destination for transporting goods between Europe, the Arab Gulf countries, and East Asia.”
Al-Fatlawi called on “the Ministry of Transport to expedite the completion of the Grand Al-Faw Port and implement the development road,” noting “the importance of effective and rapid action to enhance Iraq’s role in maritime trade and expand maritime shipping lanes.”
Al-Fatlawi stated that “the disturbances in the Red Sea and the Mediterranean Sea due to the Israeli aggression caused an increase in the cost of shipping by rates ranging between 20% and 40%, which makes the option of transporting goods by sea expensive and risky.”
