Baghdad/Al-Masala Al-Hadath: In a move that reflects the tense security situation in the region, US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan made an offer to strengthen security cooperation between the United States and Iraq, after the Iranian strike that targeted the Kurdistan region of Iraq. This move raises questions about the willingness of factions allied with Iran to accept such cooperation and how these dynamics will affect the security situation in the region.
In the wake of the Iranian attack on the Kurdistan region of Iraq, escalating regional tensions and the need to strengthen security cooperation to address common challenges are evident. In particular, Iraq's involvement in the region's conflicts makes security cooperation with the United States of great importance.
Jake Sullivan's offer to strengthen security cooperation reflects the rapid escalation of the situation in the region. The presentation addresses a range of security issues, from combating terrorism to securing borders and ensuring Iraq's stability in the face of regional challenges.
The sensitive point in this context is the reaction of the factions allied with Iran in Iraq, as questions arise about the extent of their acceptance of this security cooperation with the United States, and will these factions reject this step because of its potential impact on Iran’s interests in the region? Or will understandings be reached to move forward in enhancing security and stability in Iraq?
Sudanese Sullivan and the Prime Minister of the Territory, Masrour Barzani, met at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
A White House statement said that Sullivan held talks with Al-Sudani regarding “Iran’s reckless ballistic missile attacks.”
The statement explained that Sullivan and Al-Sudani “discussed the importance of putting an end to attacks” launched against Americans in Iraq and Syria, and affirmed “its commitment to consolidating security cooperation within the framework of a sustainable and long-term defense partnership.”
Iran announced that it targeted “the headquarters of the Zionist Mossad” (Israeli intelligence) in Iraqi Kurdistan and ISIS gatherings in Syria.
Iraq condemned the Iranian strike and denied the validity of what Tehran announced about targeting an Israeli intelligence headquarters.
On January 3, two suicide bombings occurred in the city of Kerman in southern Iran, near the shrine of the former commander of the Quds Force in the Revolutionary Guard, Major General Qassem Soleimani, during the ceremony commemorating the fourth anniversary of his death in an American raid in Iraq.
The two bombings, which were claimed by the Islamic State, left about 90 dead and dozens wounded.
