Economist Nabil Jabbar Al-Ali confirmed that any sanctions from the US Treasury on Iraqi private banks will affect the exchange rate of the dollar against the dinar.
Al-Ali said in a post on his official Facebook account, followed by Mawazine News, that “any sanctions from the US Treasury may obstruct the process of remittances, as we witnessed previously in the imposition of sanctions on four banks, the most recent of which is Al-Huda Bank, and this confuses the remittance process and afflicts us with a kind of chaos and affects... The internal exchange rate also increased significantly.”
He added, "The sanctions that were issued recently did not mention a direct list from the US Treasury Department regarding specific local banks, with the exception of Al-Huda Bank. As for the rest, they received only warnings."
He pointed out that "the Central Bank dealt with these warnings and prevented these banks from dealing in dollars in the hope that they would change their legal status and legal adaptation in terms of financial practices and that they could deal in dollars in the near future."
He continued, "These sanctions are a type of politicization, or they may be following a reasonable path, relying on monitoring and correction, and not relying on the principle of political punishment affected by the tensions occurring within the United States of America and its relationship with Iraq."
