The Iraqi Minister of Labor and Social Affairs, Ahmed Al-Asadi, confirmed that there is an increase of tens of thousands of Bangladeshi workers in the country, especially “illegitimate.”
This came during his meeting with the Ambassador of Bangladesh, Amdi Fazlul Bari, according to a statement received by Al-Mada.
Al-Asadi stressed, “The relationship is historic between Iraq and Bangladesh, especially at the level of Islamic countries, as well as what relates to the workers in the country.”
He pointed out that “the Council of Ministers’ decision to ban the entry of Bengali workers does not target Bengali citizens, but there is an increase of tens of thousands of workers despite the decision, especially illegal workers.”
He explained, “The Ministry had previously announced a mechanism to correct the situation of Arab and foreign workers for a period of 45 days and also extended it, but the recorded numbers are not proportional to the real numbers present in the country.”
He stressed “the importance of the Bangladeshi embassy’s cooperation with the ministry by contacting its nationals because this will contribute to arranging the situation of workers in Iraq legally,” stressing “the necessity of regulating the situation of Bangladeshi workers in accordance with Iraqi law, and that the entry of workers be either skilled or as helpers for people with special needs or Every foreign worker in a project or work site will be matched by an Iraqi worker.”
Regarding the memorandum of understanding between the two countries, the minister confirmed that the memorandum is ready for signing, but the issue of supplying workers needs a decision from the Council of Ministers, pointing out that the ministry will provide the Bangladeshi embassy with numbers of workers who have applied to correct their legal position.
