The Committee of Regions and Governorates not organized into a region attributed the delay in choosing the governors of Diyala and Kirkuk to a lack of trust between the partners.
Committee member Jawad Al-Yasari explained to Al-Sabah that the selection of governors took on other political dimensions, including mistrust and fear among the partners themselves, in addition to the privileges that the governor enjoys over the other members, including the deprivation of their powers due to the laws governing the issue.
He stated that all of these reasons have delayed until now the selection of the governors of Kirkuk and Diyala, stressing the need to resolve the issue of the two governorates as quickly as possible to enable the possibility of receiving allocations and starting service and strategic projects for them in order to serve the citizen away from differences between the political blocs that will be of no benefit either now or in the future.
For his part, journalist and political analyst Ali Al-Habib expected the elections to be repeated in Diyala and Kirkuk governorates due to the crisis in choosing the governor that has been ongoing for months without a solution.
Al-Habib said, in an interview with “Al-Sabah”: There is great reluctance in the governorates and their councils, especially in the issue of choosing the governor and the head of the governorate council, pointing out that there are major obstacles to the work of the Diyala and Kirkuk governorates in particular due to the continuing crisis in choosing the governor and the head of the council despite the proposals that were put forward. In order to solve it as quickly as possible.
He added that these two governorates need to resolve this issue, keep it away from the political conflicts that broke out between the blocs because of it, and begin providing services to their citizens like the rest of the governorates, as the governorate law stipulates that the first session will witness the election of a governor and the head of the governorate council within a specific period between 15 and 30 days.
Al-Habib warned that these two governorates have violated internal rules and regulations by delaying the decision of the positions of governor and head of the governorate council and distributing committees among members, which requires intervention from a legislative oversight body to regulate work in them and put an end to the crisis. He expects this crisis to end with a political solution that satisfies all parties or to dissolve the governorate council and restore it. Elections in both.
