The New Jersey Devils continue their quest for a goal (and a win) tonight.

They enter this game playing their worst hockey of the season. They have scored two goals over the last four games, been shutout three times(!) and have lost eight consecutive games.

One would think -- and hope, for sanity sake -- they could get back on track tonight in Colorado.

The Avs are a historically bad team by all accounts. They have won 18 times in 65 games, scored fewer goals per game than every team in hockey, allowed more goals per game than every team in hockey, and all of their underlying numbers are horrifically bad.

The Avs' depth players have not come through at all and that's had a negative impact on the stars, too. It's been a disastrous year for all involved.

To put things in perspective the Devils, who are 28th in points percentage, are 23 points ahead of the Avalanche and are 47 goals better in terms of differential.

The Devils may be bad but the Avalanche are significantly worse (crazy, I know). Tonight should be, uh, interesting.

Here are the expected line combinations for New Jersey:

Taylor Hall - Travis Zajac - Kyle Palmieri
Pavel Zacha - Adam Henrique - Beau Bennett
Nick Lappin - Blake Coleman - Stefan Noesen
Joseph Blandisi - Kevin Rooney - Devante Smith-Pelly

    John Moore - Damon Severson
    Jon Merrill - Ben Lovejoy
    Dalton Prout - Steve Santini

    Cory Schneider

And the expected lines for the Avalanche (via dailyfaceoff.com):

Gabriel Landeskog - Nathan MacKinnon - Rene Bourque
Sven Andrighetto - Matt Duchene - Mikko Rantanen
JT Compher - John Mitchell - Blake Comeau
Matt Nieto - Carl Soderberg - Mikhail Grigorenko

    Erik Johnson - Mark Barberio
    Fedor Tyutin - Tyson Barrie
    Francois Beauchemin - Patrick Wiercioch

    Calvin Pickard

    A few notes:

    1) Palmieri has low-key been playing very well of late. He has nine points and 32 shots over his last eight games and has looked very good on a line alongside Travis Zajac and Taylor Hall.

    2) Over the last 10 games, the Avalanche have controlled a little more than 50% of the shot attempts and chances at 5v5 while the Devils have...not. If recent trends continue, the Avs may actually have the advantage at 5v5.

    3) It hasn't been a great year for Pickard, or any Avalanche player, but he has stepped it up of late posting a .925 save percentage or better in four of his last five appearances.

Tonight's game is scheduled for 9:00 and can be seen on MSG+ and ALT.
