QAMISHLO, Syrian Kurdistan,— Kurdish forces of Syrian Kurdistan have rescued as many as 137 Yazidis from Islamic State (IS) captivity in northern Syria during Operation Wrath of Euphrates, a spokeswoman for the Women’s Protection Units (YPJ) said on Tuesday.

Nasrin Abdullah told Hawar News Agency (ANHA) that most of the rescued Yazidis were women and children who had been held by IS.

“We promised we would save all the women from Daesh (IS) and we remain committed to rescue all the other women who remain under Daesh captivity,” Abdullah said.

An estimated 2,959 Yazidis have been rescued from IS militants while nearly 3,000 others are still held by the group.

Islamic State group has captured on most parts of Sinjar (Shingal) district, west of Mosul on August 3, 2014 which led thousands of Kurdish families to flee to Mount Sinjar, where they were trapped in it and suffered from significant lack of water and food, killing and abduction of thousands of Yazidis as well as rape and captivity of thousands of women.

Those who stay behind are subjected to brutal, genocidal acts: thousands killed, hundreds buried alive, and countless acts of rape, kidnapping and enslavement are perpetuated against Yazidi women. To add insult to injury, IS fighters ransack and destroy ancient Yazidi holy sites.

Proclaiming a theocratic caliphate, IS has tried to erase the Yazidis’ identity by forcing men to choose between conversion to Islam or death, raping girls as young as nine, selling women at slave markets, and drafting boys to fight.

According to Human Rights organizations, thousands of Yazidi women and girls have been forced to marry or been sold into sexual slavery by the IS jihadists.

According to Yazidi officials over 3,500 Kurdish Yazidi women and children still in Islamic State captivity.
