Qatar's Emir will not accept an invitation from US President Donald Trump to attend talks in Washington to mediate a dispute in the region while his country remains "under siege" by its neighbors, a Qatari official said on Thursday.
"The prince has no plans to leave Qatar and the country is under siege," the official told Reuters on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue.
Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and a number of other countries cut diplomatic relations and transport ties with Qatar on Monday.
Qatari Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammad bin Abdul Rahman al-Thani said on Thursday that the crisis between his country and some Gulf countries threatens the stability of the whole region, adding that diplomacy remains Doha's preferred option and that there will never be a military solution to the crisis and we are not ready to surrender.
The Foreign Minister told reporters in Doha that his country "has never faced such hostility even from hostile countries," noting that there are no clear demands so far from Qatar, "we are waiting for them."
Qatar's foreign minister said his country was not ready to change its foreign policy to resolve a dispute with other Gulf Arab states and would never compromise.
He added that Qatar faces isolation because of its success and progress, and it is a forum for peace, not terrorism. He stressed that his country is not ready to surrender and will not be ready to renounce the independence of its foreign policy.
The Qatari minister pointed out that his country does not expect the crisis with the Gulf countries to be a stage of military escalation, adding that the deployment of the Qatari army has not seen any change and no movement of any forces.
