The French Senate on Tuesday approved a new anti-terrorism bill proposed by the country's government as an alternative to the emergency law to take effect from November.
According to the agency "Agence France Presse" that 229 deputies expressed their support for the text of the bill on the first reading, compared to 106 opponents, adding that the project has the support of members of the Republican Party, the center parties, and the "Republic Forward", headed by President Emmanuel Macaron, The European Social and Democratic Rally, while social and communist deputies, as well as two former members of the disbanded urban bloc, confirmed their rejection of the project.
The Council approved the amendments made by the Law Committee and extended the powers of the security services, allowing them to take individual measures of administrative control, surveillance, house searches and the implementation of confiscations.
The project also establishes a tracking system for air passenger file data, as well as a new legal framework for monitoring wireless communications and expanding control capabilities in border areas.
The draft law permanently holds some expanded security measures provisionally, and the Senate set December 31, 2021 as the maximum time limit for the application of the provisions of the law.
Meanwhile, many activists and human rights organizations, including Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International, have denounced the project, which will be passed from the Senate to the National Assembly, expressing concerns that the new measures will affect democratic freedoms within the country.
About 100 activists staged a demonstration in front of the Senate on Tuesday against the new bill under the slogan "Emergency Law - Police State" and "We will not give up some of our freedoms."
For his part, French Interior Minister Gerard Colomb justified the provisions of the draft text by pointing out that the threat of terrorism in the country remains constant. "We want to get out of the state of emergency, but this can only be achieved after the adaptation of our anti-terrorism mechanism, , And therefore we have to take actions that we consider pivotal. "
The state of emergency was declared in France following a series of deadly attacks that rocked the country on November 13, 2015, killing 130 people.
