What is the purpose of Sadr's "rare" visit to Saudi Arabia?

The political scene Monday, July 31, 2017

An unannounced rare visit, at the official invitation of Riyadh, is Sadr's first visit in 11 years, his last visit to the Queen in 2006.

Sadr is one of the few Shiite clerics in Iraq who demand the need to establish balanced relations with all neighboring countries.

Sadr's general trend is to seek to remove the idea from Iraq that it is a country in Iran's orbit, and that it contradicts the Iranian approach to many issues in the region, especially the situation in Syria.

While Iran seeks to strengthen the grassroots crowd at the expense of government forces, Sadr rejects this trend and has repeatedly demanded that the crowd be dissolved and merged with the official forces at the end of the war against Da'ash.

The goal of Sadr's visit to Saudi Arabia:

Sadr's visit to Saudi Arabia is a confirmation of the importance of restoring relations between Saudi Arabia and Iraq, during which he will meet with a number of Riyadh leaders, without specifying the names.

He also stressed that there is a positive breakthrough in the Saudi-Iraqi relations, hoping to be the beginning of retreat and the decline of sectarian sharpness in the Arab Islamic region, "as he put it.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi held an official visit to Saudi Arabia last month, the first since he took office in late 2014, during which he discussed with Saudi King Salman bin Abdul Aziz the coordination between the two countries in all fields.

King Salman and Abadi also met in March on the sidelines of the Arab summit held in Jordan. Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir held a rare visit to Iraq in February.
