[ltr]China has protested the approach of a US Navy ship from the South China Sea, which claims sovereignty over it, saying it will continue to take measures to protect Beijing's interests in the vital waterway demanded by several countries.[/ltr]
[ltr]A US official said the USS Xavi sailed near the Paracel Islands on Tuesday, 16 nautical miles (30 km) from the land.[/ltr]
