35 dead police and army clashes with gunmen in western Egypt

At least 35 police and army personnel have been killed in clashes with Islamists in the oasis area near Giza, west of Cairo, security and medical sources said.
The Interior Ministry confirmed in a statement, the clashes, but did not officially announce the death toll of security forces.
The clashes also killed several attackers, according to the Interior Ministry statement, which did not specify the number as well.
"Information received by the national security sector indicates that some terrorist elements of the area adjacent to Kilo 135 were taken by way of oases deep in the desert, a place to hide," the ministry said in a statement.
He added: a task was prepared (patrol) to raid those elements (..), resulting in the death and wounding of a number of policemen and the death of a number of attackers.
A source close to the security services said the security convoy was targeted with rocket-propelled grenades. The attackers also used explosives.
No one has claimed responsibility for the attack, which comes a few days after similar attacks in north Sinai, a tense security situation after six Egyptian soldiers were killed in an attack and 24 gunmen.
