(Reuters) - Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri returned to Beirut on Tuesday evening for the first time since resigning in a statement he read in Saudi Arabia, prompting his country into a political crisis.
Hariri's sudden resignation on November 4 has brought the country back to the forefront of regional rivalry between Saudi Arabia and Iran, which backs the powerful Lebanese Hezbollah party, which is part of the government.
When he announced his resignation, Hariri, an old ally of Saudi Arabia, expressed his fear of the assassination and the intervention of Iran and Hezbollah in the affairs of Arab states.
Lebanese government officials and senior politicians close to Hariri indicated that Saudi Arabia had forced him to resign and detained him in Riyadh. Both Hariri and Saudi Arabia denied this.
Lebanese President Michel Aoun refused to accept the resignation until Hariri returned to Lebanon to present it personally.
Hariri flew directly from Beirut airport to read al-Fatiha at the tomb of his father, Rafiq al-Hariri, who was assassinated in 2005.
Asked about his message to the Lebanese, who have largely united to demand his return, Hariri said "Thank you."
Hariri is expected to attend the Lebanese Independence Day celebrations on Wednesday morning.

"We stand firmly with Lebanon and will continue to support your country's efforts to protect Lebanon's stability, independence and sovereignty," US President Donald Trump said in a message to his Lebanese counterpart.
In a speech on the eve of Independence Day, Aoun called on the Arab countries to deal with Lebanon wisely and prudently, otherwise it would push it "towards the fire."
Aoun's warning came after an Arab League meeting on Sunday denounced his final statement to Hezbollah for "supporting terrorism" and said it was part of the government.
Aoun said, "My message to the Arab brothers: dealing with Lebanon needs a lot of wisdom and reason, otherwise he is pushed towards the fire."
