[ltr]BEIJING - Beijing has closed more than 13,000 websites since early 2015 for violating laws or other rules, and the majority of citizens support the government's efforts to clean up cyberspace, the official Xinhua news agency said on Sunday.[/ltr]
[ltr]The government has already tightened Internet censorship since President Xi Jinping took power five years ago, in an effort critics say is aimed at curbing freedom of expression and preventing criticism from the ruling Communist Party.[/ltr]
[ltr]The government says all countries impose regulatory controls on the Internet and their rules aim at protecting national security and social stability and preventing the spread of child pornography and violent content.[/ltr]
[ltr]Xinhua also noted that websites have also closed nearly 10 million accounts. The agency did not provide details, but the calculations are likely to be on social networking sites.[/ltr]
[ltr]"Electronic security is important for the party's long-term control over the country's long-term stability, stability and peace as well as the social and economic development and personal interests of the people," she said.[/ltr]
[ltr]More than 90 percent of those surveyed expressed support for the government's efforts to impose controls on the Internet, and 63.5 percent said the past few years had seen a marked decline in malicious electronic content.[/ltr]
[ltr]China has a strict censorship regime and does not allow access to many foreign news outlets, search engines and social networking sites, including Google and Facebook.[/ltr]
