    [ltr]Follow up of Mawazine News[/ltr]
[ltr]MOSCOW (Reuters) - At least seven Russian planes were destroyed when opposition gunmen fired shells at Syria's Hameimim airbase on December 31, the Russian daily Kommersant reported quoting two sources on Wednesday night.[/ltr]

[ltr]The report said that in the biggest loss suffered by Russia in military equipment since the air strikes began in the fall of 2015, more than a dozen soldiers were also injured in the attack carried out by "the organization is calling."[/ltr]

[ltr]The bombing killed at least four Sukhoi-24 bombers, two Sukhoi-35s, an Antonov-72 transport aircraft and an ammunition depot, the newspaper said on its Web site, quoting two "diplomatic-military" sources.[/ltr]
[ltr]Kommersant said the Russian Defense Ministry did not comment on the report.[/ltr]
[ltr]Earlier on Wednesday, the ministry said a Mi-24 helicopter crashed in Syria on December 31 because of a technical malfunction and its pilots were killed.[/ltr]
[ltr]Russia began last month to establish a permanent presence at the Hameimim base and a naval base in Tartous, although President Vladimir Putin ordered a "significant" reduction in the number of troops in Syria after announcing their mission was largely completed.[/ltr]
