US ambassador talks about a scenario to remove the Iranian forces from Syria with Russian bombing

    Wednesday, September 6th

presented the former US ambassador to Syria Robert Ford, an analysis of the Russian position on the current situation in Syria, a resident of the possibility of Moscow 's response to the request of Israel and America, concerning the removal of Iranian forces from Syria.

In an article he wrote for Asharq al-Awsat, Ford said Washington hoped Russia could force Iran to evacuate its forces from Syria. That was an important part of a strategy the US offered to an Israeli military intelligence delegation that visited Washington on August 17.

The former ambassador recalled that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu then headed a military-intelligence delegation on August 23 to Sochi, Russia, to discuss the same issue with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Ford said it was Netanyahu's threat to bomb the Syrian presidential palace if Iranian troops remained inside Syria.

He pointed out that Moscow's answer to this threat was direct, referring to statements made on August 30, by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, "which is known in diplomatic circles with a sharp language," he said that the Israeli side should not be exposed to Iranian forces , Stressing that cooperation between Iran and Syria, which does not violate international law should not cause any problem or be questioned by anyone.

The former ambassador said that Moscow is addressing the international community with a "peremptory tone of authority" regarding the situation in Syria and Libya, and may try to play an active role in the mediation efforts of the Gulf states.
"It is no secret that the Iranian-backed militias, which are fighting for President Bashar al-Assad, have helped Russia achieve a lot of strategic progress in the region," he said.

He also stressed that Russia would not risk confronting Iran simply because Washington and Tel Aviv had asked for it without offering any attractive compensation.

The former ambassador elaborated on the situation in Syria's southern tension-free zone, recalling that Russia, which deployed units of its military police there, has reduced the buffer zone, which prohibits the presence of Iranian forces there more than once.

He wondered what non-combat units could do if the Syrian army and Iranian forces attacked opposition control areas. Local councils outside the control of the Syrian government were formed according to the Russian plan to establish a decentralized system in Syria.

He stressed, "what did not attack the Russian air force regime forces and militias Iran advanced on the ground, it will not be to stop these forces never", and pointed out that he had never Russia to take such a step never. "

He pointed Ford also to the characteristics of Russian - Iranian relations that are In broad cooperation parallel to the competition for regional hegemony, considering that this factor will be key when the Russian President takes his decisions on dealing with the situation in Syria.
