NATO is preparing to send a training mission to Iraq

     Baghdad / Reuters

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said on Tuesday that the alliance was ready to respond to an invitation by the United States to expand its small training mission in Iraq in support of the reconstruction of the country after a three-year war with a sympathetic organization. Told a news conference attended by Reuters that "we must win the peace." He said he expected NATO defense ministers to begin planning a larger training mission at a meeting in Brussels on Thursday and make the final decision in July.
"It is very important to stabilize the country after the end of combat operations," he said. Stoltenberg has good relations with Trump and visited the US president at the White House last year.
Although the alliance has a few trainers working from the British embassy in Baghdad, the presence of a NATO mission to the financial resources of the alliance's 29 countries will allow military commanders to increase the number of soldiers and expand training outside the capital.
Stoltenberg will meet with Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi during a security conference in Munich in the coming days. He declined to talk about the number of soldiers in Iraq, but said the training could include the Pentagon and include the removal of explosives. Stoltenberg's statement, days after five senior NATO diplomats The North Atlantic said that the United States renewed pressure on its European partners in NATO to start a long-term mission in Iraq for training and advise to reopen a controversial issue in the coalition, apprehensive after ten years on a mission in Afghanistan. Reported that US Secretary of Defense Jim Matisse sent a letter to NATO last month calling on NATO to form an official training and advisory mission under President Donald Trump's campaign to push the alliance to do more against terrorists. Defense Secretary Jim Matisse, NATO to bear "
"The most important challenges at the moment are the electronic and terrorist attacks on several European cities," Matisse said. "We have to partner against those who target us," Matisse said, stressing his country's commitment to serious cooperation with the European Union.
US President Donald Trump has said more than once that European countries should pay the United States if they want US protection.
