[ltr]South Sudan has officially asked to join the League of Arab States. If the Juba request is accepted, the number of member states of this regional organization will increase to 23.[/ltr]
[ltr]According to the Middle East News Agency, the Republic of South Sudan handed over to the Secretariat of the Arab League an official memorandum to join the Arab League.[/ltr]
[ltr]The agency quoted a diplomatic source at the Arab League as saying that the memorandum would be presented to the council of the League, which will be held today at the level of foreign ministers at its 149th session at the headquarters of the General Secretariat in Cairo.[/ltr]
[ltr]South Sudan became an independent state on 9 July 2011, after a referendum on independence from the mother Sudan, voted for more than 98% of the citizens of the region.[/ltr]
