The United States has decided to expel dozens of "Russian spies" and shut down the Russian Consulate General in Seattle, a senior White House official said Monday, expressing solidarity with Britain over the Scrippel case.
"Today, President Donald Trump ordered the expulsion of dozens of Russian intelligence officers from the United States and the closure of the Russian consulate in Seattle because of its proximity to one of our submarine bases," the spokesman said.
"The United States is taking these actions with its NATO allies and partners around the world in response to Russia's use of chemical warfare weapons in Britain."
President of the European Council, Donald Tusk, said that 14 European Union countries have decided to expel Russian diplomats against the backdrop of the Scrippel case.
"Fourteen EU countries have already decided to expel Russian diplomats and there will be additional measures in the coming days," Tusk said.
The Polish Foreign Ministry announced by its minister that Poland decided to consider 4 Russian diplomats as undesirable persons,
The Estonian Foreign Ministry also announced the expulsion of the Russian military attaché for the same reason.
Latvia has also decided to expel one Russian diplomat and an employee of Russian airline Airflot for the same reasons.
British police found Sergey Scrippal, a former military intelligence officer who worked for British intelligence and his daughter, Yulia, at a shopping mall in the British city of Salisbury on March 4.
The British side accuses Russia of involvement in the poisoning of Scrippal and his daughter with a nerve-clotting substance "A-234", which they consider to be similar to "Novicok", while the Russian side denies that it is conclusive.
