Sixty-six people were killed in riots and fire at a police station in the central Venezuelan city of Valencia on Wednesday, the government and witnesses said.
Security forces used tear gas to disperse families gathered outside the police station in the hope of finding out about their relatives. The authorities did not release information until late in the evening.
"The prosecutor's office ensures that thorough investigations are carried out in order to make an immediate clarification of what happened in those painful events that left dozens of Venezuelan families in mourning," prosecutor Tariq William Saab said on Twitter.
Venezuela's prisons are overcrowded and rife with guns and drugs, and riots in which dozens are killed are not rare.
Local government official Jesús Santander said the state of Karabubu was in mourning after the incident in Valencia.
"Forensic personnel are determining the number of people killed," he said.
"A policeman was shot in the leg and his condition is stable, and the fire teams set fire to the fire," he said
