North Korea has informed the United States, for the first time, of its willingness to discuss the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula when North Korean leader Kim Jong-un met US President Donald Trump, a US official said.
US and North Korean officials have recently made secret contacts, in which Pyongyang has directly confirmed its readiness to hold this unprecedented summit, the official, who declined to be named, told Reuters.
The official said the contacts, which are still at an initial stage, include State Department officials apparently speaking to North Korea through its United Nations mission and intelligence agents from both sides using another separate communication channel.
Washington is counting on the assurances of its South Korean ally on the intentions of the North Korean leader.
South Korean envoys visited Washington last month to inform her of Kim's invitation to meet Trump.
While Trump and Kim exchanged hostile remarks over the past year, Trump surprised the world by quickly agreeing to meet with Kim to discuss the crisis over Pyongyang's development of nuclear weapons capable of striking the United States.
But Pyongyang has remained silent on the summit, which US officials say is being planned for May.
There was no immediate statement on the likely venue of the summit, which will be the first meeting between a US president in power and a North Korean leader.
