Iraq has the highest number of martyrs and victims of the press in the world for nearly three decades.
The Iraqi Journalists Syndicate said that the number of martyrs of the press in Iraq since 2003 to date is more than 470 martyrs, representing 18.8% of the total number of victims of the press since 1990, more than 2500, the highest rate recorded by a country since then.
More than 2,500 journalists have been killed since 1990, and with World Press Day celebrated on Thursday (May 3rd), media rights organizations warn of an increasing trend towards journalists being targeted for what they do.
On Monday, April 30, one of the deadliest days for journalists and 10 journalists killed in two separate incidents in Afghanistan.
Two suicide bombings took place in Kabul and targeted journalists directly. After the first attack, when reporters gathered to report on the incident, another suicide bomber, wearing a uniform, came in 15 minutes to blow himself up.
He claimed responsibility for the bombings, killing nine journalists and photographers, and more seriously injured.
The second separate attack took place in the Khost area, where BBC reporter Ahmad Shah died later that same day when two unidentified gunmen on a motorcycle shot the 29-year-old journalist while he was returning by bicycle to his house.
In recent incidents, the deaths of journalists in 2018 have risen to 32, according to the International Federation of Journalists.
The number is now about a third of the deaths of journalists from January to May last year, according to the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), which raises questions about whether journalism as a journalist is becoming more dangerous.
Media organizations address the number of journalists who have been killed, detained and missing since the 1990s. Their statements also include information workers, such as producers, translators and drivers, and distinguish between those killed in exchanges of fire and in an attack directly targeted or on a dangerous mission .
The death toll last year was the lowest in a decade, with 82 journalists dead, according to the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ).
The death toll has generally risen every year since the early 1990s and early 1990s, when the death toll was no more than 100 per year.
Analysts say volatility in the data reflects time difference.
The number of journalists killed rose, for example, from the early 1990s to the mid-1990s due to internal conflicts in Algeria, Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia.

"With the rise of [da'ash] in both Syria and Iraq, the journalists were attacked because they only worked in the press," said Robert Mahoney of the Committee to Protect Journalists. "They were not killed in an exchange of fire, but were deliberately targeted."
Abductions and beheadings of foreign journalists since 2012 and beyond have led to a shift in the policy of news organizations and no longer send many foreign correspondents to the danger zones.
Mahoney says that because of this policy, local journalists and media are bearing the brunt of death.
The majority of the dead in 2017 were victims of their political corruption investigations and organized crime, according to several media groups.
"For the past six years, it has been a very dangerous time to work as a journalist," says Mahoney, deputy director-general of CPJ. "Many journalists are not killed in conflicts, they are deliberately targeted for their work."
Mahoney points a finger at countries such as the Philippines, Russia and Mexico, the deadliest country for journalists, although they were not at war last year.
Despite the different objectives of armed groups in both Afghanistan and Mexico, the same strategy is used to attack and suppress journalists, said Ernest Sagaga, head of human rights and safety at the International Federation of Journalists.
Recent cases, such as the killing of Western journalists investigating corruption cases in Malta and Slovakia, have attracted attention, but Mahoney says this is "just part of a bigger picture."
"Sometimes they will take on the gunman or the hired killer, but the thing we see as full immunity is how the real killer, the person who ordered the murder, has not been brought to justice," CPJ spokesman says.
Although the death toll is a strong statistic for measuring the risks journalists face when reporting, this is not the only threat.
The year 2017 saw the largest number of journalists who had been in jail in 30 years and numbered 262, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists.
The data on the organization of the rights of the media address the number of journalists in prison on the first of December of each year, so the real numbers may be higher because the annual statistics do not address the prisoners and released at any time during the year.
"Prison has always been a form of intimidation, because it is about silencing those in prison and intimidating others abroad," Sagaga said.
According to the committee, the largest number of journalists who were imprisoned for their work, in Turkey 73 journalists, in China 41 and in Egypt 20 journalists.
