The US Congress has approved a $ 716.3 billion budget for the Pentagon to accelerate military spending and bolster the US position against Russia.
The Senate approved the defense budget bill by 87 votes to 10, one week after it received 359 votes to 54 in the House of Representatives.
"I am grateful to the bipartisan members of Congress for adopting the defense budget law in record time this year," Defense Secretary Jim Matisse said in a statement.
The law releases $ 69 billion for ongoing foreign operations (Afghanistan, Syria, Iraq and Somalia), including an increase of 2.6 percent on the salaries of members of the armed forces, and allows the disbursement of tens of billions to invest in modernizing the US Navy, Air Force and missiles.
The law prohibits the Pentagon from handing over any F-35 fighter to Turkey if Ankara does not end its negotiations with Russia to buy Russian S-400 air defense systems.
