WASHINGTON (Reuters) - US senators from the bipartisan Democratic Party submitted a bill to impose tough new sanctions on Russia and fight e-crimes in the latest congressional effort to punish Moscow for its interference in US elections and activities in Syria and Ukraine.

The sanctions included financial restrictions on new sovereign debt deals, energy and oil projects, uranium imports, as well as political figures and businessmen. According to Reuters.

The bill also expressed strong support for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and required two-thirds of the Senate's approval of any measures to break away from NATO.

Russian markets reacted quickly to the new procedure, and the ruble fell to a two-week low.

"The current sanctions regime has failed to deter Russia from intervening in the midterm elections (later this year)," said Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham.

Graham told reporters earlier that he was planning "hell" sanctions to punish Russia.

Last summer, the US Congress passed a bill to impose sanctions on Russia, but some lawmakers have expressed anger at what they see as a reluctance to implement sanctions by the Trump administration. The bill was signed by the president only after Congress passed it by a huge majority.

Many of the provisions of the measure have sought to tighten the law, but the features of the new sanctions are not yet clear.

The bill needs approval by the Senate and House of Representatives and then signed by the president to become law.
