The veteran Republican Senator John McCain, Vietnam war hero and former presidential candidate, died at the age of 81.
McCain blew his last breath, Saturday, surrounded by family members, according to a short statement issued by his office.
Last July, doctors diagnosed McCain with a rapidly growing brain tumor and has since been treated.
But the family of the Republican senator, who left Washington in December, had earlier announced he had decided to stop treatment last Friday.
His daughter, Megan, said the first task in her life now was "to live up to her father's model, expectations and love."
"The days and years ahead will not be the same without my father, but she will be full of life and love because of the model he embodied for us," she said on her Twitter page.
The senator's six-year and Republican presidential nomination in 2008 was diagnosed with cancer after doctors discovered the tumor during surgery to remove a blood clot from his left eye in July.
McCain, the son and grandson of prominent US naval commanders, was a fighter pilot during the Vietnam War. When his plane was shot down, he spent more than five years as a prisoner of war and
