Washington extends Iraq's exemption for another 90 days of Iranian sanctions

The United States has given Iraq an additional 90 days to exempt it from new sanctions imposed on Iran to continue importing energy, a government source said.
A report published by the "Journal News" by President Donald Trump, imposing unilateral sanctions on Iran's energy and financial sectors on November 5, after his decision in May to withdraw from a historic nuclear deal in 2015 between Greater powers and Tehran.
But he gave Iraq a 45-day exemption for continuing to buy electricity and natural gas for use in power plants from its eastern neighbor.
Iraq was expected to use the time to present a plan on how to stop Iranian supplies.
In the days leading up to the deadline on Thursday, Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi said a delegation of Iraqi officials would go to Washington to discuss the sanctions.
On Thursday, a government source involved in the talks told AFP that the delegation got a 90-day extension so that Iraq can continue to buy Iranian electricity and gas.
Asked if the United States had pressed the Iraqi delegation to partner with US companies to fill the gap in the end, the source said the issue was part of "complex discussions."
Iraq faces a chronic power shortage that often leaves homes without electricity for up to 20 hours a day in some areas and has been a major factor behind mass protests this summer.
To overcome this shortfall, Iraq imports up to 28 million cubic meters of Iranian gas per day for power generation and directly imports up to 1,300 megawatts of Iranian electricity.
This dependence is uncomfortable for Washington, which considers Tehran its biggest enemy in the region.
Last week, US Energy Secretary Rick Perry discussed sanctions with Iraqi oil and electricity ministers in Baghdad and said Iraq must cooperate with US companies to become independent on the energy side.
"Working together, the United States and Iraq can develop oil, gas and water industries in Iraq," Perry said.
Iraq's electricity ministry said it could stop relying on Iranian electricity within two years, but stopping the import of gas would be more difficult.
One solution is to develop Iraq's ability to capture burning gas from torches during oil extraction.
The World Bank estimates that the amount of wasted gas burned represents an annual loss of about $ 2.5 billion - enough to bridge the gap in gas-based power generation in Iraq.
Another source familiar with the negotiations told AFP that Washington was trying to persuade Iraq to partner with US companies such as General Electric, Peter Hughes and Orion to pick up gas from torches.
"The United States told Iraqi officials it was a win-win win. They will stop relying on Iran, rely on their gas and benefit US companies in this process. "
The Iraqi electricity ministry or the US embassy in Baghdad did not respond to Agence France-Presse's requests for comment.
