The US envoy to Syria, James Jeffrey, will also take on the role of Washington's special envoy to the International Coalition Against Gangs, which has called on the terrorists to resign after the resignation of Brit Mckgork last month.
The US State Department said in a statement Friday that Jeffrey "will lead and coordinate the efforts of the US State Department to implement President Trump's announcement of a responsible withdrawal of US forces from Syria in coordination with our allies and partners, without harming the objectives of the United States in Syria and Iraq, including the final defeat of Daish."
McGork, appointed by former President Barack Obama and confirmed by Trump in his post to represent Washington at the International Coalition, announced his resignation on December 21 after Trump's sudden decision to withdraw US troops from Syria, and ended his duties on 31 last month.
In order to reassure allies involved in the international coalition, the State Department said that "there is no timetable for a military withdrawal that will be very coordinated so as not to leave gaps that could be exploited by terrorists."

Some 2,000 US troops are based in northern Syria, most of them training Kurdish local troops for a fight
