The US Supreme Court has approved a request by the Trump administration to implement a new law that limits immigrant asylum claims on the border with Mexico and is a key element of Trump's tough immigration policies.
The law obliges the majority of immigrants seeking asylum to first seek a safe haven in a third country through which they have transited to the United States. The court said it may enter into force while legal challenges continue to be valid.
Of the court's nine judges, liberal judges Sonia Sotomayor and Ruth Bader Ginsburg opposed the law.
The verdict gave Trump a victory at a time when much lower courts rejected his immigration policies. "A big victory from the US Supreme Court for asylum law at the border," Trump said on Twitter.
The law would bar most immigrants from seeking asylum at the US southern border. It represents the Trump administration's latest effort to curb immigration, a key issue in his presidency and his campaign to win a new term in elections scheduled for next year.
