Newspaper: The Iraqi government is resisting Iranian pressure to open the border between the two countries

    News _ Baghdad
The American New York Times reported that the Iraqi government is resisting Iranian pressure to push the borders between the two countries to trade exchange and visitors to religious sites.
The newspaper quoted a member of the Security and Defense Committee in the Iraqi parliament, Badr Al-Ziyadi, as saying that "Iran is pressing behind the scenes on the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs to open the borders."
The head of the Iranian Hajj organization, Ali Reza Rashidian, announced last week that "planning began to reopen the border between Iraq and Iran."
But a spokesman for the Iraqi Border Authority, Alaeddin Al-Qaisi, told the newspaper, "Our land border crossings with Iran and Kuwait are completely closed to passenger traffic and commercial exchange, and this closure will continue until further notice."
Iraq closed its borders with Iran in the past, as part of its measures to combat the spread of the Corona virus in the country.
The first case of HIV infection recorded in Iraq was due to an Iranian student believed to have transmitted the virus from the Iranian city of Qom to the Iraqi city of Najaf, where he was receiving lessons in religious sciences.
Iran is one of the hotspots of the spread of the Corona virus in the world, where more than 75 thousand cases and 5200 deaths were reported, with about 1400 new cases recorded daily.
Without trade and transportation between Iran and Iraq, it will be difficult for Tehran, which is subject to international economic sanctions and faces difficulties in selling its oil, whose price has fallen considerably, to exploit some of its non-oil industries, of which Iraq was one of its most prominent customers.
Until the border was closed by the virus, Iraq was a major market for Iranian agricultural products, building materials, dairy goods, as well as fish.
Iran is a major supplier of natural gas to Iraq, which depends on it to supply fuel stations in the south and center of the country with fuel during periods of high use, but Iraqi demand for gas has decreased recently.

    Thanks Rocky.

Iraq was the major source of dollars to Iran through the auction from imports.  This could be the start of the end of auctions.

But a spokesman for the Iraqi Border Authority, Alaeddin Al-Qaisi, told the newspaper, "Our land border crossings with Iran and Kuwait are completely closed to passenger traffic and commercial exchange, and this closure will continue until further notice."

Maybe just not to make the Iranians feel singled out and stop the cross-border virus spread.

    Fits economic development:

Optimists talk about the possibility of turning the serious threat into an opportunity, but the only chance that has not yet been missed is to go to production and close border crossings to imports, reduce consumer spending, adjust the salary scale, reduce the differences between the layers of employees and impose an upward tax on individual income.
