Baghdad - Mawazine News The
visit of Pope Francesco to Iraq sparked controversy in the political and popular circles, due to the divergence of readings about it and giving it connotations close to or away from the historical event, as well as the reflection of political and societal polarization on the course of the visit.
Upon his arrival at Baghdad airport last Friday, the Pope received Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi, after which the Pope met the Iraqi President Barham Salih, accompanied by a group of leaders of political blocs and ministers, and then visited the Al-Najat Church in Baghdad.
The meeting of the Pope of the Vatican and the prominent authority, Mr. Ali al-Sistani - in the province of Najaf yesterday, Saturday - was a milestone in the atmosphere of the visit, amid hopes that the meeting would encourage religious dialogue and consolidate coexistence among the components of the Iraqi people. The Pope also visited the ancient city of Ur in Dhi Qar Governorate, southern Iraq, where He performed a "prayer of religions" in the presence of representatives of different sects and nationalities, and then returned to Baghdad and held a mass at Our Lady of Saint Joseph Church.
Today, the Pope arrived in Erbil and then moved to Mosul, where he visited churches there, and returned to Erbil to hold a mass in an international stadium there.
Despite the positive atmosphere, wide popular interaction and support for the visit, political and religious figures made observations on its course, based on the idea of component representation in everything, an idea that has governed the political process in Mesopotamia since 2003.
And while the Pope’s schedule included the visit of the highest Shiite cleric in Iraq, Ali al-Sistani in Najaf (south of Baghdad) and a visit to Erbil (the center of the Kurdistan region), parliamentarians and religious figures from the Sunni component questioned the reason for the visit’s absence from any meeting with Sunni personalities, or visiting the Iraqi Fiqh Academy in Mosque of Abu Hanifa al-Nu'man, which is the most prominent reference to the Sunnah in the country.
The head of the Iraqi parliament, Muhammad al-Halbousi, was able to breach the visit’s schedule and obtain a one-on-one meeting with the Pope of the Vatican at the Peace Palace in the capital Baghdad, although this meeting was not included in the agenda of the visit, but the President of the Republic, Barham Salih, was able to arrange this immediate meeting, according to Sources who followed the atmosphere of the visit talked about it.
Welcome and reservation
The preacher of the Imam Abu Hanifa al-Numan mosque, Sheikh Mustafa al-Bayati, expresses his reservation not to include the Pope’s visit schedule to meet the scholars of the Fiqh Academy, as it represents the front of the Sunni fatwa in the country and the official representative of the Sunnis.
Al-Bayati says that the Pope's visit to Iraq is an important step that contributes to the return of Iraq to take its rightful place.
He added that although the Pope visited Shiite, Christian and Kurdish moral destinations, the visit schedule was devoid of a Sunni moral side, and this did not agree with the message of love, peace and respect for all the components that the Pope brought.
The political and service performance and in
preparation for the Pope's visit, several service projects were established, such as paving roads, painting sidewalks, and covering some buildings, as happened in the province of Najaf, which brought the file of political and service performance back to the fore, according to leader in the Salvation and Development Front, Atheel Al-Nujaifi.
Al-Nujaifi says that the Iraqi political blocs suffer a great failure in managing the state, and do not have solutions to the country's worsening crises of corruption, uncontrolled weapons, and many political and economic crises.
He added that in these circumstances, the Pope’s visit to Iraq came, and the political blocs were keen to ignore all the country's crises and promote a meeting with the Pope as if it were a political event or a security and economic victory.
Al-Nujaifi hoped that the Pope would pick up the remark made by the reference not to allow any Iraqi politician to enter his home in Najaf, accompanied by the Pope.
A cultural and religious openness
and the meeting between Sistani and the Pope of the Vatican has renewed the debate over the centrality of the Shiite authority and the representation of the sect between the followers of Sistani and the guide of the Iranian revolution, Ali Khamenei.
The Secretary-General of the "Citizens" movement, Ghaith Al-Tamimi believes that the importance of this visit lies in its history, as the Pope of the Vatican visits Iraq for the first time, noting that the Christian presence in Iraq is older than the Vatican itself, and the Iraqi Church is older than the Catholic Church itself, and it also represents a great moral value. For Iraqi Christians who have been marginalized, neglected and abused.
Al-Tamimi added that the meeting of the reference Sistani with the Pope removes traditional Shi’ism and Najaf from its spiritual isolation, and opens the door for more cultural and spiritual openness necessary for the role of Najaf and traditional Shi’ism.
He added that the Pope’s visit to the Ziggurat of Ur in Nasiriyah is an invitation to "Abrahamic geography" and the importance of Iraq in consolidating the values of peace and stability in the region and the world, especially among the followers of the Abrahamic religions.
For his part, the prominent leader of the Sadrist movement, Hakim Al-Zamili, affirmed that the visit is important to Iraq and will be in its favor, as it was highlighted by the international media accompanying the visit, and this will positively affect the internal situation of Iraq and the issue of tourism and highlight the culture and civilization that Iraq enjoys to other countries. Especially since the visit schedule included large activities such as the meeting of the President and the reference Ali al-Sistani, and the city of Ur, the birthplace of the Prophet Ibrahim.
Regarding the controversy surrounding the Pope's meetings, Al-Zamili added that the visit was prepared according to a prior schedule, and included a meeting with specific personalities, and although it did not include all Iraqis and prominent and important personalities, we welcome it and everything it included, although it was not complete.
He pointed out that there are other personalities and important leaders who were supposed to meet with them, but the excuse is that time is limited, and that the Pope is an old man, and he cannot wander further.
Regarding the visit, Father Mukhlis Shasha - who is one of the companions of the Pope - expressed his hope that it would be a blessing for Iraq and the Iraqis, and a good visit for politicians.
Shasha added, "We need to do more in this land, and this is the Pope's message, and we need in the political field to make the right man in the right place, and to learn a big lesson from the Pope's humble personality, and we hope that Iraq will have figures of those models." Ended 29 / h
