{Local: Al Furat News} The Agriculture Committee in the House of Representatives has sounded the alarm about water scarcity this season, which affects agriculture and exposure to drought, calling on the government to act urgently on neighboring countries, Turkey and Iran, to ensure the country's share of water. While the Ministry of Resources sent a message of reassurance about this file, the Ministry of Agriculture expresses its concern and concerns about the impact of water scarcity in the current agricultural season.
The head of the Parliamentary Agriculture, Water and Marshlands Committee, Salam Al-Shammari, said in a press interview, “We have communicated with the Minister of Water Resources regarding the complete interruption of water by the Iranian side and the decline in water levels by the Turkish and Syrian sides, and the government, the Prime Minister and Parliament should demand water shares from countries Neighborhood. "
He pointed out that “there are international charters and laws that affirm the right of (downstream countries) to water and guarantee their share of (upstream countries), and Iraq today is going through a water-stifling crisis, and everyone must join their efforts in order to bring Iraq’s share of water until we guarantee agriculture for the next three years,” And to secure farmers' entitlement to the water quota. "
For his part, the advisor to the Ministry of Water Resources and the ministry’s spokesperson, Aoun Dhiab Abdullah, explained that “the Haditha Dam and Habbaniyah Lake are also full of water, and this matter makes us feel reassured about the possibility of securing the next summer season without affecting the drought that is affecting the river. On the other hand, Iraq has moved and continues to move about pressure towards Turkey releasing the agreed quantities, 500 cubic meters per second, as a minimum for the Turkish-Syrian borders, and this amount is divided 58% to Iraq and 42% to Syria.
Abdullah added, "The Turkish side is obligated to release these quantities, and there is communication with the Syrian side in order to direct a unified framework and to demand from the Turkish side to supply Iraq and Syria with their water shares during the coming summer season."
He explained that “the rate of decline is currently 50% of the agreed natural revenues that reach Iraq, but during the past two days its impact appeared clear and it is expected that if Turkey re-launches the required quantity at the borders, a certain amount will reach no less than 290 cubic meters per second.” "The water in our dams and storage is good, and it gives reassurance to meet the needs of next summer."
Regarding the impact of the decrease in the water level on the agricultural plan in light of the lack of release of the required quantities from the Turkish side, the spokesman for the Ministry of Agriculture, Hamid Al-Nayef, explained in a press interview, that “During the past two days, there were many concerns in the Ministry of Agriculture, as it has a summer plan that depends on the availability of water. It cannot be properly prepared if the situation remains as it is. "
He added, “The Ministry of Water Resources and the Ministry of Agriculture promised to give the water storage in the dams to complete the summer plan, but this is not enough.
